The SŽD series ЧС3 (German transcription TschS3) of the Soviet Railways (SŽD) is an express train locomotive for 3 kV direct current , which arose from the SŽD series ЧС1 using more powerful traction motors and was specially developed for higher tractive forces.
history
In order to be able to transport longer passenger trains , the SŽD ordered a more powerful electric locomotive from Škoda in Pilsen than the SŽD series ЧС1. The company's management decided to modernize the aforementioned locomotive. This resulted in a new series. Compared to the last delivery of the SŽD series ЧС1, the new locomotive received more powerful traction motors of the type AL 4846eT . The drive was changed: instead of the Sécheron spring drive , the new drive based on the Škoda system with cardan shaft was used. There were few changes to the rest of the locomotive's equipment. The locomotive body with the one-sided ascent to the driver's cab was also left as it was. The new locomotive is a reinforced version of the SŽD series ЧС1.
All 87 locomotives of the ЧС3 series were built in 1961. On the basis of this locomotive, the two-section locomotive ET40 was later developed for the Polish state railways PKP at Škoda .
Initially, the locomotives served the Moscow - Kharkiv - Ilowajsk section , later they also served the Trans-Siberian routes . They were used there until 1991 when they were replaced by the more powerful ЧС2 series . The locomotives were converted for operation with multiple traction, so that longer trains with two locomotives can also be controlled by one engine driver. Apparently the power of just one locomotive was no longer sufficient for the trains after a short time. In 2010, some locomotives were converted into electric multiple units. The modifications for this concerned the roof and the car body. This was redesigned for the transport of people. For the conversion to an electric multiple unit , the designation of the vehicles changed from ЧС3 to ПЭM-3 or ПЭM-4 . The ЧС3.056 was also operated as an electric multiple unit . Exact decommissioning dates for the locomotives cannot be found in the literature.
Two locomotives of the series have been preserved in museums;
- the ЧС3.073 in the Museum of Railway and Railway Technology in Novosibirsk and
- the ЧС3.045 in the Moscow Railway Museum (Riga Railway Station)
