The locomotives of the SŽD series 2ТЭ116 (German transcription 2TE 116) of the Soviet Railways (SŽD) are wide-gauge diesel locomotives with diesel-electric power transmission, which are primarily used in freight train service. They were the first locomotives with the new locomotive body from the Luhansk locomotive factory and were one of the first SŽD locomotives to have a 16-cylinder four-stroke diesel engine. They are nicknamed Fantomas .

history

2TE116-1021

The diesel locomotive development in the former Soviet Union went in the years 1970-1980 in the direction of a two-section diesel locomotive with an output of 8,000 hp. The diesel locomotives of the 2ТЭ116 series represent an important milestone in this development.

The double locomotives of the 2Т116 series were intended for freight train service on the railway lines of the former Soviet Union . They were developed by the Luhansk Locomotive Factory in collaboration with the Kolomna Locomotive Factory , Charkov Electric Motor Factory and the Institute for Diesel Locomotive Construction and the Ministry of Railways . They were the first series locomotives in the Soviet Union to be equipped with a 16-cylinder four-stroke diesel engine, which had previously been tested on the five prototypes of the 2ТЭ40 series .

technical description

2TE116-1423

The locomotive consists of two individual sections that are connected with an SA3 coupling and can be operated together from a driver's cab. It is also possible to use the two sections individually. The two sections are connected with a car transition protected by rubber beads .

The locomotive body consists of a load-bearing floor frame which is provided with non-load-bearing side walls. The roof consists of five removable hoods, which facilitate the installation and removal of the equipment in the engine room. Three hoods carry the silencers of the exhaust system as well as the intake grilles arranged in the sloping roof for the cooling air of the main generator, the rectifier system and the traction motors. The suction openings can be opened and closed electro-pneumatically.

All drive and auxiliary units are housed in the engine room. The diesel generator unit, which consists of the 16-cylinder four-stroke diesel engine 5D49 and a three-phase generator, is arranged in the middle part of the frame . The 2D70 and 18-9DG-01 motors were also used in later variants . The motors were square cones , the piston diameter and the stroke were each 260 mm. The diesel engine and generator are mounted on a welded subframe and are connected to one another with an elastic multi-plate coupling. The bogies were designed as in the SŽD series ТЭ109 and had lemniscate links to guide the axle bearings. The traction motors were designed as pivot bearing traction motors .

The electrical power transmission was a standard AC-DC transmission of the Soviet design, as it was also used in the ТЭП70 , 2ТЭ121 and ТЭМ7 locomotives . In this type of electrical power transmission, the diesel engine drives a three-phase synchronous generator, the current of which is rectified and fed to the DC traction motors.

The diesel engine is started by an electric starter which, after starting, serves as an alternator and supplies control circuits, lighting and battery charging with 110 V direct current. The locomotive has two drive motor fans, one each for cooling the rectifier system and the main generator, as well as four fans for the diesel engine cooling system. All of the aforementioned fans are driven by asynchronous motors, those of the diesel engine cooling system being designed with external rotors . The main compressor, the engine room fan, the fuel pump, the pre-lubrication pump of the diesel engine and the heater fan in the driver's cab are driven by DC motors.

Modifications

2ТЭ116A (2TE 116A)

This modification was a universal diesel locomotive developed in the 1980s for maximum consistency with the 2ТЭ121 built at the same time .

2ТЭ116Г (2TE 116G)

2TE116G

This modification is a gas-fueled diesel locomotive. It consisted of three sections. Two sections were the drive units with a diesel engine, in between was the non-powered gas indicator. Only one copy of this modification was built in 1988.

2ТЭ116УР (2TE 116UR)

2TE116UR-001

This diesel locomotive is a modification for freight trains and passenger trains and was built in 1996 in just one example. The performance of the diesel engine has been increased to 2 × 3,600 hp. The top speed was 120 km / h. It was equipped with a resistance brake and an electrical heating system for the train with a voltage of 3,000 V and an output of 575 kW. This was supplied with an auxiliary generator with rectifier.

2ТЭ116U (2TE 116U)

2TE116U-012

This modification was called the Perfected one and 308 copies were made. The external differences were marked by a modified roof on the driver's cab, a new vehicle cabin and a change in the center position light. It had a different compressed air generation system, a resistance brake and a microprocessor management and diagnostics (MSY-TP). The power of the diesel engine has been increased to 3,600 hp.

2ТЭ116УМ (2TE 116UM)

2TE116UM-011

This locomotive was produced in 31 copies as a modification for Mongolia . It had its own numbering, starting with the number 001. It had an engine output of 3,600 hp, and the exhaust system was also changed. Outwardly it was similar to the 2ТЭ116U . Compared to this, the rear roof segment was placed a little lower.

2ТЭ116УК (2TE 116UK)

This modification is similar to the 2ТЭ116U , it had no microprocessor management and no air conditioning. The engine output was 3,060 hp. Two copies were built.

2ТЭ116УД (2TE 116UD)

2TE116UD-031

This is a modification similar to the 2ТЭ116U and 37 copies were produced. She owned the GEVO V12 diesel engine from GE and the A723MU2 traction generator .

The diesel locomotives operated in various services on many of the country's railways. Services were operated both in freight train service and in passenger train service, where the unit consisted of two sections of the diesel locomotive, attached to the head and to the end of the train, which consisted of four to eight intermediate cars. The fleet of cars consisted of both standard and electric multiple units such as the SŽD series ЭР9 . The DTL2 and DPL2 trains operated by the railway administration in the Donetsk region are indicative of this . They were later replaced by the passenger train service by the newer locomotives of the series ТЭП70 .

In the course of the rapid electrification, the locomotives have lost many routes in recent years, such as B. in the greater Kharkiv area . This led to the relocation of the locomotives to neighboring regions such as the Bachmatsch - Romodan - Kremenchuk lines , where 2TЭ116 were also stationed. The main covering in the Romodan – Kremenchuk section consists of four times the covering of 2TЭ116 . Since the vehicles have been continuously developed, they are still an important part of the railway lines in Russia , Ukraine , Kazakhstan , Latvia and Estonia . However, vehicles have already been decommissioned. A detailed list of the services performed can be found on the Russian Wikipedia.
