The S-Bahn surfer climbs over the door or a window out of the moving wagon and holds on to the outside edge of the roof with his hands while he tries to support himself with his feet on the open window. Most of the surfer is therefore outside of the wagon during the action. Jumping on the approaching train is also practiced , both from the side and from behind, whereby one can get between the train and the platform edge or under the train. The surfer can then also stand on the buffers or steps that are attached to the vehicles .

Train surfers often climb onto the roof of the train or the S-Bahn (roofride).

Leaning out of wide-open windows while supporting your feet on steps or benches inside the wagon is not considered to be surfing the S-Bahn, although the majority of the body can be outside the wagon and is therefore exposed to the dangers listed below .

A distinction must be made between S-Bahn surfing and (illegal) riding on running boards, buffers, clutches, etc., as it used to happen with overcrowded trains or is still represented in developing countries with insufficient transport infrastructure. This was a behavior developed out of necessity, while the motive for S-Bahn surfing is the "kick" or provocation by violating the rules.

transfer

A transfer is a maneuver in surfing in which the person performing the train leaves the train through one window and comes back in through the next window. This can lead to death and serious injuries in the event of a fall.

hazards

The surfers get out of the clearance profile when they are outside the vehicle , which very often leads to a collision with a solid obstacle or an oncoming train. Due to the high speed of the trains and the turbulence in the air in a counter train, the surfer often loses his footing, hits obstacles such as catenary masts , signs or trees or suffers an electric shock after coming into contact with electrical lines .

There is a risk of slipping, falling onto the track bed or onto the rails and being run over by the wheels of the wagons.

The so-called "roofride" is the most dangerous type of surfing. In addition to the danger posed by obstacles, on lines electrified by overhead lines, an arc from the overhead line, on which a voltage of up to 25,000 volts is present, even without direct contact with the S-Bahn surfer, can cause severe burns or death to lead.

Deaths

Between 1989 and 1995 there were 41 S-Bahn accidents. 18 of these 41 accidents resulted in the death of the person, the age group was between 13 and 25 years. In 2008, 40 young people died while surfing the S-Bahn in Germany alone .

prevention

To prevent S-Bahn surfing, a lock was installed in many types of trains, which prevents the doors from opening while the train is in motion. With the newer locomotives of Deutsche Bahn is omitted steps. Except for a skylight, windows cannot be opened.

Administrative offense

S-Bahn surfing can constitute an administrative offense within the meaning of Section 28 Paragraph 1 No. 9 General Railway Act (AEG) and can be punished with a fine of up to 50,000 euros .
