İZBAN is the S-Bahn system in the İzmir metropolitan area in western Turkey, with a population of 3.5 million .
Society
The name İZBAN is an acronym from İzmir and Banliyö Trenleri (Eng. "Suburban Trains İzmir"). The company belongs to the Turkish state railway TCDD and half to the city of İzmir.
history
The S-Bahn runs on the Izmir – Afyonkarahisar and İzmir – Eğirdir routes , some of which date from the 1860s. The mixed traffic of suburban and regional trains originally operated here was not very attractive and was little used by the residents of the metropolitan region. İZBAN was founded on January 10th, 2007 to make better use of the potential offered by this railway infrastructure . Lines and railway systems have been fundamentally modernized, expanded and expanded. All level crossings were replaced by overpasses or underpasses, the speed increased and the travel times shortened. In Karşıyaka and Şirinyer, two S-Bahn tunnels were built, four S-Bahn stations were laid underground and the areas above were converted into parks. These are the Şirinyer stations on the south line and the Alaybey , Karşiyaka and Nergiz stops on the north line.
The vehicles were completely exchanged for modern, low-floor S-Bahn trains. The network of the urban bus lines ESHOT was aligned to the S-Bahn, 15 new transfer stations between the S-Bahn system and the city buses were set up. As a result, the number of users rose sharply.
The S-Bahn system went into operation in 2007 with two lines and 76 km in length. Around 150,000 passengers are transported between the 30 stations every day.
network
The İZBAN network consists of two S-Bahn lines. The line designations Kuzey hattı (dt. = North line) and Güney hattı (dt. = South line) result from the geographical context of the course of the line , which cover the northern and southern areas of the Gulf of Izmir . The network of routes connects the suburbs to the northwest and south of the city as well as the airport . Together with the Metro Izmir subway system , the urban bus network and the ferries in the Gulf of Izmir, the S-Bahn lines form the backbone of local public transport in and around İzmir. An extension to the south by 17 km to Selçuk is under construction.
Since the common terminus of both lines is Alsancak, they are usually tied through: A train runs continuously on both lines from Cumaovaşı to Aliağa and vice versa. The journey on the south line takes 35 minutes and on the north line 63 minutes.
technical features
vehicles
There are currently 73 trains on the network, 33 of the types E22000, E22007 and E22018 come from the Spanish manufacturer CAF , and another 40 from the Korean company Hyundai Rotem .
To strengthen the heavily used network, six vehicles from Istanbul's Marmaray local transport system are to be borrowed, which will not be needed there before the expansion is complete. These are five- and ten-car multiple units from Hyundai Rotem. The vehicles are 3 m wide; a ten-car train is 220 meters long and can carry up to 3,040 people. For this high capacity and a quick change of passengers, the cars have five double doors on each side and wide standing areas, but only relatively few seats. The car bodies are welded from stainless steel. This is intended to compress the 10-minute cycle to a 6-minute cycle.
In addition, 25 new three-part railcars are to be purchased, but this will take until 2019. In nine of the vehicles, the intermediate car will be a double-deck vehicle.
Infrastructure
Like the state railway, the İzmir S-Bahn uses standard gauge of 1435 millimeters. The platforms are designed in such a way that it is always possible to get in and out of the vehicles steplessly.
The power supply is via a catenary . The operating voltage is 25 kV AC.

Line overview
The two lines have their common starting point at Alsancak station at the port of İzmir. The north line has the line color orange, the color of the south line is red. On February 6, 2016, the "red line" was extended beyond Cumaovaşı to Tepeköy. The aim of the expansion here is Selçuk. The north line is to be extended over 51 km to Bergama and in some parts will have a third track next to the high-speed line to Bursa.

Timetable
The İZBAN trains start operating around 5.30 a.m. and then run until shortly after midnight.
The cycle intervals vary depending on the time of day and workload. In the off- peak hours in the early morning and at night before closing time there is a 15-minute cycle. From 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., there is almost a 10-minute cycle, albeit slightly different. Due to the great demand, the cycle should be compressed to six minutes.
Rates
There is a tariff association with the urban modes of transport (metro, bus, cable car) and the ferry operator.

Transport capacity
In 2011, İZBAN transported an average of 150,000 passengers a day, and has been increasing ever since. This means that the S-Bahn system in İzmir, along with the Marmaray, which opened in 2014 as part of the S-Bahn in İstanbul, is one of the most powerful network in Turkey. The S-Bahn system has now reached its limits and is described as "overcrowded" in the trade press.
