The SAGSAGA is a trade association for the promotion of business game method in Germany. The registered association sees itself as an interdisciplinary network of people who are interested in business games and other experience-oriented forms of learning and teaching.

Surname

The club name SAGSAGA is integrally pronounced like a German word ( "SAGSAGA" phonetics zagzaːga ) and is abbreviated for the English-language name S wiss A ustrian G erman S imulation A nd G aming A ssociation . The official German-language equivalent is "Society for simulation games in Germany, Austria and Switzerland" and was the club name until 2019. Simulation and Gaming ( S&G for short ) is the common name for the simulation game method in the Anglo-Saxon region. The abbreviation SAG (A) is used internationally by several associations that deal with the simulation game method and with which SAGSAGA cooperates. In addition to the international business game association ISAGA ( International Simulation And Gaming Association ), these include associations such as SAGANet ( Simulation and Gaming Association - The Netherlands , Netherlands), NASAGA ( North American Simulation and Gaming Association , North America), SAGSET ( Society for the Advancement of Games and Simulations in Education and Training , Great Britain), SIGIS ( Società Italiana dei Giochi di Simulazione , Italy), JASAG ( Japan Association of Simulation And Gaming , Japan) and OzSAGA ( Australian Simulation and Games Association , Australia).

Goal setting

The aim of SAGSAGA according to the statutes is to spread the simulation game method and to promote its development. "As a simulation method is intended to be understood as a broad range of experiential teaching and learning methods, such as, among others classic corporate and management simulations , computer simulations , role-playing games , educational games , scenario techniques , case methods , project methods , experiential learning activities , business theater etc., for simulation of processes [ ...] and contribute to the development of system competence in different areas of life. "

SAGSAGA offers its members - business game developers and researchers, as well as business game users from the private sector and public institutions such as universities, schools, NGOs, etc. - a platform for professional exchange.

The main focus of the association's activities are:

  • Establishing and maintaining a network and promoting professional exchange
  • Promotion of dialogue also across national borders
  • Support of training, further education and training of business game specialists
  • Funding and implementation of research projects

Association structure

SAGSAGA is an association organized on a voluntary basis. The board currently consists of 7 members, and Eric Treske has been the chairman since June 2015 (as of October 2019). Membership is open to natural as well as legal persons and associations of persons. In its application-oriented and scientific work, SAGSAGA is supported by an advisory board. The official journal of the Simulation And Gaming associations, to which SAGSAGA belongs, is the magazine Simulation & Gaming, published by SAGE Publications since 1970 . In 2017 the association had over 200 members.

Events and initiatives

Network meeting

Network meetings on various topics are held at least twice a year at different locations in Germany, Austria or Switzerland. These meetings offer members the opportunity to try out new simulation games or to discuss current topics. In addition, people interested in research usually meet for exchange.

European business game forum

The European Business Game Forum is currently the largest manufacturer-independent specialist forum on the subject of business games. It was launched in 1985 by Walter Rohn, who was then head of the German business game headquarters and has since been employed as the edut @ ain who regularly both as a stand-alone event as different in the context fairs and congresses Learntec or Professional Learning Europe (PLE) instead . After it was founded in 2001, SAGSAGA took over the organization of the event and has been hosting it every two years since 2015 together with the Center for Management Simulation (ZMS) of the DHBW Stuttgart .

German simulation game award

The German Management Game Prize is awarded to outstanding academic theses on the subject of management games. Special prizes are awarded for dissertations and habilitation theses. SAGSAGA has been a cooperation partner of this project sponsored by the Center for Management Simulation (ZMS) of the DHBW Stuttgart since the establishment of the German Management Simulation Prize. The aim of the award is to make mostly unpublished work accessible and thus to support the further development of the method.

International business game day

In 2017, SAGSAGA announced an International Day of Simulation & Gaming for the first time . Since then, events have taken place worldwide on one day in November that deal with simulation games, their development, application or research. The aim of this interactive experience day is to make the simulation game method known to a wider public. Participation in the events is free and they are mostly offered by members of SAGSAGA and its partner associations. An example of activities on the International Business Game Day 2018 were various lectures, business games and workshops under the motto "Play the future - experience and understand systems and sustainability" at the Vorarlberg University of Applied Sciences . The 4th International Business Game Day is November 13, 2020.

ISAGA conferences

In 2004, SAGSAGA hosted the annual international specialist conference of ISAGA under the direction of the university professor and founding chairman Willy Christian Kriz . It took place in Germany for the first time in 15 years. The venue for the conference on Bridging the Gap: Transforming knowledge into action through gaming and simulation , attended by over 500 people, was Munich. Ten years later, in July 2014, the 45th ISAGA conference under the leadership of SAGSAGA took place in Dornbirn (Austria). The motto of the event was The shift from teaching to learning: individual, collective and organizational learning through gaming & simulation .
