history

The SSV Union was founded in 1906 as a pure swimming club by some young people from the northern part of the city . A year later, the association had 78 members. Over the next few years, water polo and artificial jumping were also added to the program. Until after the Second World War, the association was based in various baths; It was not until 1949 that he settled in Döhren, where he owns an open-air swimming pool by the large Döhren pond . The club house that the Unioners use in summer was also built here.

The water polo players drew up to 1000 spectators to their games in the Ihme in the 1920s. In the 1950s, Union's water polo team was one of the best in Hanover. It rose to the league in 1960 (at that time the highest German division) and took part in the final round of the German championship a year later. When the water polo Bundesliga was introduced, Union decided not to participate; the team was later able to record some regional successes in the lower classes. SSV Union 06 last played in the Hanover district.

Among the swimmers, active members of the SSV Union 06 have won several German and European championships in individual and with the SGS team, especially in the last 30 years; with Birte Steven the club had a representative at the 2004 Olympic Games .
