The company was founded in 1914 by Else Züblin-Spiller as the non-profit organization Swiss Association of Soldiers' Welfare. The aim was to provide the Swiss soldiers with inexpensive and healthy food and to offer non-alcoholic refreshments. Towards the end of the First World War in January 1918, the company , which was organized in the form of an association , received its first order to manage a staff restaurant, that of Bühler AG, and thus entered into business catering. In 1920 the name was changed to Schweizer Verband Volksdienst , which remained part of the company name until 1999. During the Second World War , in addition to its business catering, the association again ran soldiers' rooms and supported military men and their relatives with a welfare department.

In 1973 the name was changed to SV-Service Schweizer Verband Volksdienst , the legal form of an association was retained. The focus remained on the management of staff restaurants .

In 1992 SV-Service expanded to Germany through the takeover of KGS GmbH, which is now run under SV (Deutschland) GmbH. In 1996 the company expanded its business area to include the two areas of care catering and event catering. In 1998, SV-Service expanded to Austria by founding KGS Catering GmbH, which today operates under the name SV (Austria) GmbH.

In 1999 SV-Service was transformed into an AG. 90.8% of the shares are held by the SV Foundation. This exercises the rights and obligations under stock corporation law and decides on the use of its dividends within the framework of the SV Foundation's purpose, primarily in social projects.

In 2000, SV-Service took over Culinarium AG from UBS , which ran the staff restaurants of the Swiss Bank Corporation for almost four decades. Since 2004, the entire group has been operating under the SV Group umbrella brand.

In 2014 the SV Group celebrated its 100th anniversary.

In 2015 the SV Group launched the “SV Restaurant” brand. Thus the core business of the SV Group - the communal catering and thus the management of staff restaurants and canteens - has its own appearance.

Field of activity

The company comprises the five areas of business (community catering), care (residences, homes, clinics and hospitals), events (events), hotel and restaurant . The group of companies employs a total of 8,558 people and in 2014 generated sales of 707 million Swiss francs.

With a share of 75 percent of total group sales, the "Business" segment is the main field of activity of the SV Group. The remaining sales are accounted for with a share of 8 percent to care , 3 percent to events , 9 percent to hotels and 5 percent to restaurants . Overall, the SV Group runs more than 600 companies.

The company's main geographical area of activity is Switzerland, where SV Switzerland generates 76 percent of its total turnover. With 320 managed establishments, SV Schweiz is the market leader in community catering. The remaining sales are attributable to the subsidiaries in Germany with 17 percent and in Austria with 7 percent.
