SYN (magazine)
SYN is an Austrian student journal with a focus on theater, film and media studies , which is produced by students of this subject as well as other humanities, social and cultural science disciplines and is funded by the Philological and Cultural Studies Faculty of the University of Vienna. The first 16 issues were published every six months by Lit Verlag in print form (electronically available via Phaidra), and since the collective issue, the magazine has been published by the new academic press.
Emergence
In 2009 several students of theater, film and media studies at the University of Vienna came up with the idea of publishing a magazine that would offer the possibility of a first publication. It should enable students to get started in the scientific practice of publishing before completing a master's or diploma degree.
An issue with around seven to ten articles has been published every six months since the 2010 winter semester. The topic of the issue is summarized under an adjective, for which work by students from German-speaking countries (Austria, Germany and Switzerland) is being sought using Call for Papers . The articles are selected by the editorial team. The work process consists of two editing and two editing phases as well as the peer review phase. To this end, the team has an international scientific advisory board at its disposal, which uses a peer-review process to assess the articles that have been created up to that point. Each article is anonymized and forwarded to at least two peer review partners. In addition to the work of the students, essays and interviews are also published. Previous interview partners include: a. Stefanie Sargnagel , Claudia Bosse , Stefan Ruzowitzky , Hermes Phettberg , She She Pop , Hermann Nitsch , Soap & Skin , Rudolf Polanszky , The Tiger Lillies , Florentina Holzinger and Kenneth Goldsmith . Illustrations are added to the magazine's written articles, which are obtained through a Call for Pictures .
SYN also cooperates with other magazines such as the Journal 360 ° as well as event series such as dichtung // s // ring , kinolog and the This Human World film festival .
Intentions and goals
The SYN magazine would like to offer students of the humanities, social and cultural sciences a platform on which they can publish their bachelor's or thesis for the first time. The aim is to make topics and questions of the growing generation of researchers accessible to as diverse a target audience as possible.
