Saadat Hasan Manto

Saadat Hasan Manto (born May 11, 1912 in Samrala , Punjab , † January 18, 1955 in Lahore ) was an Urdu writer and screenwriter. He wrote fictional diary and travel reports in the form of short stories. One of his most important topics was the division of India in the course of the independence of the states of India and Pakistan , which is also his most famous story, Toba Tek Singh .

Life

Manto came from a Muslim-Kashmiri family. He worked as a journalist in Aligarh and went to Bombay in 1936 to publish the film magazine Mousavar . He started as a screenwriter at Ardeshir Iranis Imperial Film . In 1943 he switched to Filmistan and wrote apolitical scripts. He later went to Bombay Talkies with Ashok Kumar . Because of the persecution of Muslims in Bombay in the course of the partition of India , Manto left the country in 1948 and settled in Lahore.

He published 15 volumes of short stories, the novel Baghair Unwan Ke (1940), five radio play collections, three essay collections and two sketch collections and the play Teen Auratein (1942). After his death, autobiographical notes about his time in film appeared under the title Meena Bazaar . His work formed the basis of the British television production Partition (1987).

He was charged six times with profanity , three times before and three times after the partition of British India , but there was never a conviction. Some of his works have also been translated into other languages.

His most important filmed works include: Kisan Kanya (1937) by Moti Gidwani , Chal Chal Re Naujawan (1944) by Gyan Mukherjee , Ghar Ki Shobha (1944) by Harshadrai Mehta and Mirza Ghalib (1954) by Sohrab Modi .

Manto died of cirrhosis of the liver .
