The Saarstraße is a street in Trier , located in the district of Trier-South . As a continuation of Neustraße, it leads from Südallee in a southerly direction through the southern district to the Töpferstraße intersection, where it turns into Matthiasstraße. As one of the main street axes, the street is one of the most important shopping streets in Trier.

history

The name of the street is derived from the Saar river , as the street used to be one of the important exit roads towards Saargau or Saarbrücken . The street had its importance as the main arterial road for almost 2000 years, because the Porta Media , the south gate of the Roman Trier, was located at the confluence of the Töpferstraße in Roman times .

Saarstrasse is one of the few streets in Trier that has remained essentially unchanged. Its exact current course has existed since 1808, when the French engineer Gautarel widened it. It was called Saarstrasse in the direction out of town since 1873, while in the direction of town it was initially called St. Barbara. From Löwenbrücken it was named after the suburb. Only after the incorporation of Löwenbrücken and St. Barbara in 1888 the entire street was renamed Saarstrasse.

However, its importance as an arterial road declined due to the construction of the parallel four-lane Moseluferstraße in the 1960s.

Historic buildings in the street

Many buildings in the street are cultural monuments . There are several listed buildings in the street . Most of the buildings date from the 19th century, but were partly rebuilt or restored after severe or partial destruction in the Second World War . Part of the street is also part of the monument zone Saarstraße 15–29, Gerberstraße 30 and 41, and another part falls under the conservation statutes “Saarstraße 1 to 55 and Südallee 10 to 23”. The monument zone Eberhardstrasse also runs parallel to Saarstrasse . A detailed list of all buildings in Saarstrasse can be found here . The most famous buildings on Saarstrasse are the Villa Ehses, Saarstrasse 12, and the hotel “Alte Villa” at Saarstrasse 133. The preserved crucifix on the house wall at Saarstrasse 46 is also remarkable.
