life and work
He came from a wealthy family originally from Trabzon . The mother Lütfiye came from a conservative-religious notable family from Pulathane (today Akçaabat). Her mother came from the palace environment, her father from a family of officers. Sabahattin's father Mehmet Rahmi Eyuboğlu was a graduate of Mekteb-i Mülkiye , Mutasarrıf in Anatolia and later a member of the Grand National Assembly . He came from Maçka and traced the origins of his family to Saladin . Therefore, he chose the family name Eyüboğlu ("Son of Ayyub ").
From 1928 to 1932 Sabahattin studied language, literature and aesthetics in Dijon , Lyon and Paris . On his return he taught French language and literature at Istanbul University from 1933 to 1939 . After a second stay in France in 1947/1948, he taught comparative Turkish and French literature at the University of Istanbul from 1950 and art history at the Technical University and the Art School .
After the coup on May 27, 1960 , he was recalled and was only allowed to continue teaching at the Technical University. Together with Vedat Günyol , he translated excerpts from Tribun du peuple ou Le défenseur des droits de l'homme (1795) by François Noël Babeuf into Turkish. He was charged for this in 1963 and, after a long trial, acquitted in 1966.
After the coup on March 12, 1971 , he was arrested on charges of communist conspiracy. Released at the end of 1972, he died shortly afterwards on January 13, 1973 as a result of imprisonment and torture.
