Self-image as a canon lawyer

Demel sees canon law as an instrument to protect legitimate spaces of freedom in the church, to discover and develop new ones. It is important to her to "take up hot topics in the Catholic Church, put your finger in the wounds and propose feasible solutions".

The following principles are decisive for them:

  • Preach structures too! - Structures are secondary to the content; but if they do not fit the content or contradict the content, they falsify the content, and even threaten to kill it
  • Language depicts reality and creates reality
  • Knowledge is power - also and especially in legal matters
  • Right without mercy is cruelty, just as, conversely, mercy without right is arbitrariness (Thomas Aquinas)
  • Right is like a lantern in the night. It shows the way. Only drunk people hold on to it (based on Karl Rahner)

The focus of activity and research is canon law aspects of Roman Catholic theology.
