Sacha Menz

Sacha Leo Cornel Menz (born May 25, 1963 in Vienna ) is a Swiss architect , professor at ETH Zurich and former dean of the architecture department D-ARCH at ETH Zurich.

Live and act

Sacha Menz comes from the Bozen merchant family Menz. His ancestors lived in the listed Palais Menz from 1753 .

Menz has lived in Switzerland since 1972 and attended grammar school in the Alpenquai Lucerne School . He studied architecture at the ETH Zurich and graduated in 1989 with Dolf Schnebli . Since 2004 he has been a full professor for architecture and building processes at the ETH Zurich. From 2009 to 2017 he was head of the newly founded Institute for Technology in Architecture (ITA) at ETH Zurich and initiator of the construction of the new “Arch_Tec_Lab” building at ETH Zurich. From 2011 to 2015 he was also Dean and Vice-Dean of the Department of Architecture. Since 2009, he has headed the advanced training program for overall project management at the professorship for architecture and building processes, the advanced training program in corporate management for architects and engineers and the advanced training program in digitization.

Menz has a daughter and lives in a relationship. He lives in Männedorf on Lake Zurich (Canton Zurich).

Activity as an architect

After studying architecture, he began working with Dolf Schnebli , Tobias Ammann and Flora Ruchat-Roncati in 1989 . In 1990 Menz co-founded the architecture office Sacha Menz and Kuno Schumacher Architects in Zurich. From 1991 to 1997 he established Joran Sport AG for the design and production of bicycles. Since 1997 he has been co-owner of the architecture office sam Architekten und Partner AG in Zurich. In 1997 he was also co-founder of the real estate company Staub Holding AG . Since 2001 he has been a member of various architecture juries and has been a member of the architectural advisory board of the city of Ostfildern in Baden-Württemberg since 2002 .

His research interests are mainly the economic issues of the entire planning and construction process, but also the organization of those involved and the integration of sustainability goals. Menz initiated and led numerous multidisciplinary research projects, including from 2014 to 2015 Deputy Director of the NCCR (National Center of Competence in Research at ETH Zurich) in digital fabrication, from 2012 to 2014 head of Module X (Housing) at Future- Cities-Lab in Singapore, since 2015 co-main responsible for Dense and Green Building Typologies at the Future-Cities-Lab in Singapore and since 2019 board member of the Future-Cities-Lab GLOBAL. In 2019 Menz developed a digital atlas, a tool called MAP (methodical application for the planning and construction process).
