Barry Coe (* 26. November 1934 in Los Angeles , California as Barry Clark Heacock , † 16 July 2019 in Palm Desert , California) was an American actor .

life and career

His father Francis Elmer Heacock worked as a publicist for Warner Brothers in Los Angeles, but died in a car accident in 1940. His maiden name Barry Clark Heacock was changed to Joseph Spalding Coe after his mother married Joseph Spalding Coe senior in a second marriage. Coe was studying at the University of Southern California in the mid-1950s and was discovered by a Hollywood talent agent during that time. From 1955 he received some initially smaller film roles, often in war films as a soldier.

Coe played his first significant role in 1957 in the successful melodrama Embers under the Ashes . Further film roles followed in the Western Bravados on the side of Gregory Peck and in the comedy With me not next to Clark Gable , Carroll Baker and Lilli Palmer . In 1960 he received the Golden Globe Award for Best Young Actor for his appearance in the comedy That's Only in America , a sign that he was trusted to make the leap to film star. Between 1961 and 1962 he played the lead role of the crime-solving magazine reporter Paul Templin in the television series Under Hot Heaven (Follow the Sun) . In 1962 he appeared in an episode of the Bonanza series as a possible half-brother of the Cartwrights, but then disappeared from the series again after just one episode. The background was that Coe was hired by the producers as a possible replacement for Pernell Roberts , but Michael Landon saw Coe, who was about the same age, as competition for himself and ensured that Coe's one-time guest appearance remained.

In the course of the 1960s, his career faltered and he had to be content with guest appearances in television series and smaller film roles such as in The Fantastic Journey . His last movie role was in 1978 as diving instructor Tom Andrews in the horror film Jaws 2 . In the 1970s and 1980s, he appeared as a character Mr. Goodwrench in television commercials for General Motors .

In addition to acting, he was also an entrepreneur in later years as a retailer of nutritional supplements . Coe was married to his wife Jorunn Kristiansen, Miss Norway in 1959, for over 60 years until his death. They had three children. Barry Coe died of bone marrow disease in July 2019 at the age of 84.
