Pernell Elvin Roberts (born May 18, 1928 in Waycross , Pierce County / Ware County , Georgia, † January 24, 2010 in Malibu , California ) was an American actor .

Life

Roberts began his acting career in the late 1940s and worked on the stage for a few years before signing a film contract with Columbia Pictures in 1957 . This was followed by her first supporting roles in films and television series.

Roberts was best known for his role as Adam Cartwright in the television series Bonanza , in which he participated from 1959 to 1965. Roberts left the series shortly before the end of the sixth season, the last episode with leading character he completed in episode 195 ("Unforgotten songs"; original title: "Dead And Gone"). In episodes 196 ("Pleasant rest", original title A good Night's Rest ) and 197 ("The richest man in the world", original title To Own the World ), Pernell Roberts can be seen in shorter scenes. The reason for leaving was that as the series progressed, Roberts became increasingly dissatisfied with what he believed to be stereotypical and less socially relevant scripts. He found his figure of the eldest son, who, as a grown man, always obeyed his father's orders, to be one-dimensional. After fulfilling his six-year contract, Pernell left the series. Although the script dramaturgy of the series left a return of the character he portrayed open, Roberts never made use of this option.

Roberts remained loyal to acting, but did not attract any greater attention with the engagements that followed. He had guest appearances in many different series, but received no leading roles. This only changed when he played the title role of chief physician Dr. John McIntyre took over on the television series Trapper John, MD . For this role he was nominated for an Emmy Award in 1981. Roberts was most recently in 1997 for the episode "Super Detective Mannix" from Diagnosis: Murder in front of the camera. This episode was a spin-off of the 1973 " Mannix " episode Little Girl Lost .

Roberts was married four times and had a son from his first marriage who was killed in a motorcycle accident in 1989. One of his wives was Judith Roberts from 1962 to 1971 . The actor was socially engaged and campaigned for equal rights for African Americans, so he took part in the Selma-to-Montgomery marches . Pernell Roberts died in January 2010 at the age of 81 of a pancreatic tumor .
