MacArthur - hero of the Pacific is a war film from the year 1977 is based on the plot of historical facts.

action

World War II - Southeast Asia is at war with Japan, which has been threatening and subjugating its neighbors since the mid-1930s. With the attack on Pearl Harbor, almost the entire world was in World War II.

US General Douglas MacArthur , who is also Field Marshal of the Commonwealth of the Philippines , is in command of the American armed forces in Southeast Asia in the Philippines . After the attack on the American naval base Pearl Harbor in Hawaii , the Japanese immediately began further attacks on American and British military bases in the Pacific region. MacArthur, one of the most eccentric generals in US history along with General Patton , is in a defensive battle against the vastly superior Japanese armed forces. He does not succeed in disembarking his troops from the Philippines to Australia and, due to the command situation, he has to abandon his people and flee from the approaching enemy troops himself. He and his family are brought to Darwin by speedboat . Before boarding one of the speedboats, he formulated a sentence that would make him legendary a few years later - "I'll be back!" - which he did. The film documents his further years as Commander in Chief of the American Armed Forces in the Pacific and his great military successes during the war. The legendary landing in Leyte Bay and the victory over the Japanese in 1945. Another stage is the Korean War at the beginning of the 1950s and his unsuccessful attempt to get into politics.

background

The film is based on real events that happened during the Japanese occupation in Southeast Asia. He regards Douglas MacArthur as a person, head of the family, soldier and politician.

Others

Like many films that have been set in the past, this one also had some design errors. For example, in various scenes, aircraft types can be seen that were not yet on the market, such as the Douglas DC-7 , with which President Truman flew to the first meeting with MacArthur, and a McDonnell F-4 Phantom II , drops napalm bombs in a scene during the Korean War.

criticism

The film service judged the film in its contemporary criticism as a pathetic "swan song for the five-star General MacArthur". MacArthur - Hero of the Pacific is "Despite declamatory criticism of the war, an uncritical, melodramatic transfiguration of the title character."

Awards

Gregory Peck received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor - Drama in 1978, but at the time was left behind against Richard Burton ( Equus - Blind Horses ).
