Ward Costello

Edward Costello (born July 5, 1919 in Boston , Massachusetts , † June 4, 2009 in Redlands , California ) was an American actor , composer and lyricist .

Life

Costello served as a soldier during World War II . He served in both the Royal Air Force and the United States Army Air Corps . He was recognized for his bravery and received five medals. After his military service he studied acting at the Yale School of Drama in New Haven, at the drama school of the Old Vic Theater in London and at the University of Birmingham . While studying acting, he worked as a journalist for CBS and various newspapers.

Costello began as a stage actor in New York City in the late 1940s , where he played the title role in Strindberg's The Father in an off-Broadway production at the Provincetown Playhouse Theater in August 1949 . In 1955/1956 he appeared in over 200 performances at the Longacre Theater in New York in the play The Lark by Lillian Hellman . In the play about the life of Jeanne d'Arc , he played the role of Joan of Arc's father alongside Julie Harris (Joan), Christopher Plummer (Warwick) and Boris Karloff (Cauchon).

Costello starred in numerous movies since the late 1950s .

In the science fiction film Terror from the Year 5000 (1958), which has meanwhile become a cult classic, he played the scientist Dr. Robert Hedges, who thwarted the plans of a mad professor with his commitment. In 1960 he starred in the role of US Navy Captain Harry Black in the war drama The Admiral ( The Gallant Hours ) on the side of James Cagney , Richard Jaeckel and Dennis Weaver . He also composed the music for the film's title theme and wrote the text for it.

Then he was not on the screen for several years; it was not until 1976 that he was in the television film MacArthur - Hero of the Pacific in the role of the former US Secretary of State, General George C. Marshall again for a feature film; Gregory Peck played the role of General Douglas MacArthur . In 1979 Costello played in the sports drama Golden Girl on the side of Susan Anton , James Coburn , Leslie Caron and Curd Juergens . In the 1980s he was in the horror thriller Anxiety with Lori Lethin and in the drama Isn't that my life? , both in 1981. He played a congressman in the political thriller Missing and General Rogers in the action thriller Firefox .

Costello also frequently worked for television . On television he was mostly seen in series episodes. In the 1950s, he appeared in several television series, including The Philco Television Playhouse , The Alcoa Hour , Suspicion and Alfred Hitchcock presents . From 1964 to 1966 he played the male lead of the widower and later family father Peter Ames in the TV series The Secret Storm .

In the 1970s he appeared in the television series The Man and the City , Petrocelli and The Streets of San Francisco . In 1980 he starred in the US series Our Little Farm in the episode The Blind Painter . He took on the role of Jeremy Unger, who was the first to recognize blind Annie's talents.

In General Hospital he played Senator Martin Drake. In 1988 he starred in Starship Enterprise: The Next Century as Admiral Gregory Quinn. He had his last two roles in 1989 in the television series Newhart and in the television film Roe vs. Wade , which is based on a court case.

Family and death

He was married to Gerarda Costello. They had three sons and a daughter. He also had two brothers and a sister.

Costello died on June 4, 2009 of complications from a stroke at the age of 89.
