Saffire - The Uppity Blueswomen was an American acoustic blues group that originated in Virginia .

Career

The group was founded in 1987 by Ann Rabson , Gaye Adegbalola and Earlene Lewis. Lewis left the group in 1992 and was replaced by Andra Faye. They were the first acoustic band to be signed by Alligator Records , a label to which the group remained loyal until they broke up in 2009.

Saffire's music is characterized by a mix of serious blues numbers and novelty songs written for entertainment. But music by artists who influenced her is also part of her repertoire, especially Big Mama Thornton , Ida Cox and Koko Taylor . In their texts they often represent concerns of the women's movement . The song 1-800-799-7233 addresses domestic violence against women. The title refers to the number of the National Domestic Violence Hot Line. Saffire has performed with blues greats such as B. B. King , Ray Charles , Willie Dixon and Koko Taylor.
