Ann Rabson

Ann Rabson (* 12. April 1945 in New York City ; † the thirtieth January 2013 in Fredericksburg , Virginia ) was an American blues - pianist , singer and guitarist .

Life

She fell for the blues as a child after hearing a Big Bill Broonzy record for the first time . At the age of 17 she received a guitar from her father and has played as a professional musician ever since. She didn't start playing the piano until she was 35, but soon reached such a level that she was inducted into the Boogie Woogie Hall of Fame. She played the piano for recordings by Jimmy Rogers , Robert Jr. Lockwood , Hubert Sumlin , Bob Margolin , Francine Reed, Carey Bell, Cephas and Wiggins, Johnny Shines , Levon Helm , John Jackson and Snooky Pryor . She performed both solo and as a member of various bands and was a member of Saffire - The Uppity Blues Women for 25 years . After the band broke up at the end of 2009, she increasingly appeared as a soloist.

After a long illness, Rabson died of cancer on January 30, 2013. She leaves behind her husband George Newman, her daughter and a granddaughter.
