The saffron weaver ( Ploceus xanthops , syn. Hyphantornis xanthops ) belongs within the family of weaver birds (Ploceidae) to the genus of the bunting weaver ( Ploceus ).
The Latin additional species comes from ancient Greek ξανθός xanthos , German 'yellow' and ancient Greek ωψ ōps , German 'face, eye' .
The bird is found in Africa in Angola , Botswana , Gabon , Kenya , Namibia , Rwanda , Zimbabwe , South Africa , Tanzania and Uganda .
The distribution area includes bushy habitats with tall grass, on the edges of forests and along rivers, mostly between 1200 and 2300 m altitude.
features
The species is 17 to 18 cm tall, the male weighs between 40 and 50, the female between 35 and 40 g. The male in the breeding plumage is predominantly yellow, greenish on the back and the wing-coverts , the tail is also golden-yellow with yellow edges of the control feathers . Characteristic are the mighty black beak, the pale yellow iris and the orange colored throat. Young birds have a greenish, slightly striped upper side.
The species is monotypical .
voice
The male's singing is described as a short rattling followed by trills and squeaking tones "chichi-chichi-chi-squirr" or "tikatikatikatika".
Way of life
The diet consists mainly of insects , fruits, seeds and nectar
The breeding season is between January and April in most areas, as early as September in South Africa, Zambia and Malawi. The species is monogamous and sometimes breeds in small colonies . The male builds several nests to choose from, the clutch consists of 1 to 3 pale blue, whitish or pink eggs.

The stock is not considered to be at risk ( least concern ).
