The beach fattened herb grows as a wintering green, annual herbaceous plant and reaches stature heights of mostly 5 to 8 (3 to 10) centimeters. The stem is upright and there is no central rosette of leaves. The opposite leaves are narrowly lanceolate, somewhat fleshy, mostly glabrous and they have no spike tip.

The fruit stalks are upright. The capsule fruit is four-lobed.

The basic chromosome number is x = 7, there is tetraploidy , i.e. 2n = 28.

ecology

The beach fattening herb is a therophyte . There is self-pollination or insect pollination. The spread of the diaspores , it is the seeds, is carried out by the wind.

Occurrence

The beach fattening herb is widespread on the European coasts and extends in the Mediterranean to Asia Minor. In Central Europe and on the British Isles on the coasts of the North Sea and the Baltic Sea, it populates open sandy areas in the outer dike area, but also goes into gappy salt marshes. In Central Europe it is a character species of the Sagino-Cochlearietum danicae from the association Saginion maritimae, but also occurs in societies of the association Armerion maritimae. It occurs scattered at its locations. The beach fattening herb needs silty, sandy, saline soils .
