Mohammad Saifur Rahman ( Bengali : সাইফুর রহমান , Sāiphur Rahamān ; born October 6, 1932 in the village of Bahar Mordon, Sylhet ; † September 5, 2009 in Ashuganj , Chittagong ) was a Bangladeshi politician . He was the leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and had the longest tenure as Minister of Finance in Bangladesh.

Saifur Rahman was a participant in the language movement in 1952. He went to the University of Dhaka and graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1953. He later studied in London , England until 1958. Rahman became a specialist in monetary policy , fiscal policy and development economics.

He was President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Bangladesh and President of Bangladesh Jatishangha Samiti. Rahman joined a political party in 1977, the Jatiyatabadi Ganatantrik Dal , a coalition of the later President Ziaur Rahman , which then became the Bangladesh Nationalist Party in 1978 .

Political career

Rahman had been a member of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) since 1978. Rahman was appointed finance minister of the first BNP government under Ziaur Rahman and was this until 1980. Later he was again finance minister from February 15, 1996 to December 29, 2008. During this time he made 12 budget plans in his country and extolled the opening of the Bangladesh economy for other countries in the early 1990s. His predecessor as Minister of Finance of Bangladesh was Azizur Rahman , and his successor was Syed Mohsin Ali .

Family and death

Saifur Rahman had three sons and a daughter. His wife, Duree Samad Rahman, died of cancer in 2003. One of his sons, M. Naser Rahman, is also active in politics. Saifur Rahman died in a car accident on the way home in the Brahmanbaria District on the way from Dhaka to Maulvibazar.
