The Saiha District is a district in the Indian state of Mizoram . The administrative seat is the place of the same name Saiha .

geography

Saiha district is located in the southeast of Mizoram on the border with Myanmar . The area of ​​the district is 1409 square kilometers. The neighboring district is Lawngtlai district in the west and north and Myanmar in the east and south.

history

In the late 19th century, the British conquered the region and the area became part of Assam. During World War II it was close to the front line between the British and the Japanese. After Indian independence, Assam joined India in 1949. Later Assam was split up into several states and the area became part of the new state of Mizoram. The district belonged to the Mizo district until 1976 . From then until early 1999 to the Chhimtuipui District . At that time, this district was divided into the two districts of Chhimtuipui and Lawngtlai . The current district initially continued to be called Chhimtuipui. Later he was given the current name of Saiha District .

According to the 2011 census, the Saiha district has 56,574 inhabitants. With 40 inhabitants per square kilometer, the district is very sparsely populated. The district is predominantly rural. Of the 56,574 residents, 31,464 (55.62%) live in rural communities and 25,110 people in urban areas.

The Saiha district is one of the areas of Mizorams which are almost entirely populated by members of the "tribal population" ( scheduled tribes ). They included (2011) 54,642 people (96.59 percent of the district population). In 2011, 83 people (0.15 percent of the district's population) belonged to the Dalit ( scheduled castes ).

A clear majority of the population of Saiha District speaks a Tibetan Burmese language . The main language Mara accounts for over 66 percent. education

Despite significant efforts, the goal of full literacy has not yet been achieved. While more than 96% of men can read and write in the cities, the literacy rate of women in rural areas is just under 82%. But education has made huge strides in the last few decades.
