Saint (Original title: Sint ) is a Dutch black comedy and a horror film from 2010 about Sinterklaas , a character who is comparable to Saint Nicholas in Germany. Directed by Dick Maas , it is a return to the horror genre from his earlier films Elevator of Horror (1983) and Damned Amsterdam (1988). The story distorts the folk traditions of Sinterklaas and portrays him as a ghost who murders large numbers of people when his annual day coincides with a full moon.

action

On December 5, 1492, a gang led by the former Bishop Niklas was killed by villagers who no longer accepted the gang's looting and murder. In the years when the gang's death date falls on a full moon, they return as murderous ghosts.

The public does not know about it and annually celebrates the Sinterklaas festival on December 5th, with adults who do not believe that Sinterklaas exists, but who make the children believe it exists. The Zwarte Pieten are not black because of their race, but as a result of the fire in which they were killed. Niklas' crook has sharp edges and is a weapon. On December 5th, Sinterklaas and the Zwarte Pieten go unnoticed as many people are dressed for the celebrations and therefore look like them.

The last time the ghostly gang returned was in 1968. Hundreds of people were killed, including the entire family of a young boy, Goert, who is now a police officer. The authorities downplay the incidents and, like the Roman Catholic Church, keep the possible involvement of Niklas as a secret.

When there is also a full moon on December 5th, 2010, Goert is very concerned and recommends that all Sinterklaas activities be banned and increased surveillance, but he is not taken seriously and is put on leave.

As Goert predicted, the ghost gang will return and kill hundreds of people. Since the gang is immune to bullets, they are eventually chased away by fire. In addition to Goert, the student Frank also plays a heroic role in the film.

Controversy

Although the children were not allowed to see the film, parents were concerned as the film posters could be seen in the streets and in the entrance halls of the cinemas. It shows Sinterklaas with a mutilated face and an evil look. Some people have been concerned that this might be confusing and scary for young children who still believe in Sinterklaas. A criminal complaint was filed in October 2010 demanding the removal of all posters. In the subsequent court hearing, director Dick Maas claimed that if the parents let their children believe that Sinterklaas existed, they could also inform them that the man on the poster was not the real Sinterklaas. The court ruled in Maas's favor, determined that the mutilated face was not visible enough on the poster and dismissed the complaint.
