action

A lift in a Dutch skyscraper seems to have had a life of its own for some time. For example, the guests of a celebration get stuck for no apparent reason and are only rescued shortly before suffocation. Shortly afterwards, when a security guard was also locked in the elevator and beheaded while trying to escape from it, the maintenance company intervened. Maintenance specialist Felix Adelaar examines the lift but cannot find any faults in the circuitry. This puzzles him as more cases will soon pile up.

Supported by the curious reporter Mieke, who senses a story in the incidents, Adelaar continues to investigate and discovers the company Rising Sun Electronics , which the lift company equipped with the necessary electronics. Shortly afterwards, Felix is suspended from duty. With a sure conscience that he is on the right track, he and Mieke continue his investigations on his own. These lead both to a professor, who once for Rising Sun has worked. This ultimately gives the decisive clue to the mysterious attacks: Rising Sun had carried out strange experiments with microchips and one of them was built into the circuitry of the elevator in question. Felix goes into the building's elevator shaft at his own risk and finally finds the control panel. With horror, he realizes that the built-in chip has developed a life of its own and already controls the entire control of the elevator. When Felix destroys part of the controls, the chip fights back by letting the elevator go up and down to kill Felix. But Felix succeeds in apparently completely destroying the controls. But when he is about to fall down the shaft, Mieke appears and pulls him upstairs. At that moment the elevator crashes down to the basement. When Mieke wants to leave the skyscraper with the injured Felix, the boss of Rising Sun appears. He pulls out a handgun and shoots four times into the control where the chip is located. But the chip still shows one last sign of life and a rope of the elevator snaps at the shooter and hangs him up in the elevator shaft. Felix and Mieke leave the skyscraper completely shocked and exhausted.

Others

  • Elevator of Horror was the debut film by director Dick Maas. 18 years later he was allowed to stage his first work for the US market again. James Marshall , Naomi Watts and Michael Ironside play the leading roles in the 2001 remake Down - Get in if you dare .
  • Felix Adelaar's maintenance company should actually be called Delta Lifte . Since this company already existed and in order to avoid licensing and copyright problems, the name was changed to Deta Lifte shortly before shooting began .
  • The film was a low-budget production and was made with low production costs in just 30 days.
  • Halfway through the shooting, Dick Maas fell out with producer Matthijs van Heijningen and was fired. The next day, Maas was hired again because van Heijningen could not implement the project without Maas' help.
  • The production team worked with Schindler Lifte BV , a real elevator manufacturer, for certain terminology and the coherence of the equipment . They cooperated willingly as they liked the idea and the script.
  • Several shots were needed for the scene in which the security guard is beheaded from the elevator. Therefore, the falling dummy looks dirty and disfigured from repeated use.

Reviews

"Viscous horror film, convincing only in a few suspense scenes, which can only with difficulty elevate the realistic image of an over-engineered world into terrifying."

Awards

The film was awarded the Golden Calf in the category Best Director at the Dutch Film Festival .
