Germanus of Paris , French Saint Germain , (* 496 near Autun , † May 28, 576 in Paris) is a saint of the Catholic Church . He was the 20th Bishop of Paris from 550 to 576 .

Germanus lived as a hermit in Autun as a young adult before he was ordained a priest in 530 . Ten years later he became abbot of St. Symphorien in Autun, again ten years later, 550, Bishop of Paris and Archkaplan of the Frankish King Childebert I. He was a popular preacher, whose mission was particularly aimed at the prisoners.

Today Germanus is best known for the founding of a church and a monastery that he undertook outside Paris ( des prés means in the fields ). The church of St. Vincent was supposed to house the relics of St. Vincent of Valencia , the monastery was given to the Benedictines . Germanus was buried in this church, which later got its current name after him: St. Germain-des-Prés .

Around the church and the monastery, the Parisian district of the same name, Faubourg Saint-Germain (crossed by the Boulevard Saint-Germain ) developed, whose fame grew with that of jazz and existentialism .

Germanus' Catholic and Orthodox Remembrance Day is May 28, the day of his death.

Germanus of Paris is the patron saint of prisoners and music. He is called against the risk of fire and fever.
