Sajjad Sharif

Sajjad Sharif ( Bengali সাজ্জাদ শরিফ , born September 24, 1963 in Dhaka ) is a Bangladeshi poet and translator who is known for his poems and for his work on the avant-garde literary magazine Gandiva . He also works about as a senior editor for Prothom Alo , the largest daily newspaper in Bengali in Bangladesh . In Germany, her poems became known primarily as part of the Goethe Institute's translation project Versschmuggel .

life and work

Sajjad Sharif grew up in the old town of Dhaka. He has been active as a poet since the 1980s . Working with other colleagues, he was concerned with the radicalization and modernization of contemporary poetry in Bengali, a language spoken by over 200 million people. In this context, he was committed to the literary magazine Gandiva and made a not inconsiderable contribution to the fact that it provided decisive impulses for the newer Bangladeshi poetry. His own texts are considered to pave the way for the use of self-referential and self-reflective language in contemporary poetry from Bangladesh. Sajjad Sharif's poems often experiment with the linguistic combination of ancient and contemporary lyric means. His texts have been published internationally in magazines and anthologies. His debut volume was published in Bangladesh under the title Chhurichikitsa (Knife Therapy) .

In addition to his own lyric texts, Sajjad Sharif is also known as a lyric translator and he writes essays critical of literature . In particular, his translations of the poems by Federico Garcia Lorca , which appeared under the title Rokto o Oshrur Gatha: Federico Garcia Lorca (Ballad of Blood and Tears: Selected Poems of Federico Garcia Lorca) with an introductory essay from his pen, received high recognition. With Jekhane Liberty Mane Statue (Where Liberty is Statue) Sajjad Sharif published an independent collection of essays.

Sajjad Sharif also appeared as co-editor of the anthology Bangladesher Nirbachito Kobita (Selected poems of Bangladesh) , which was published in India . In 2015 he was a juror at the final of the Muse Masters poetry competition for performative poetry of the British Council in Bangladesh.

As part of the Versschmuggel 2016 project, poems by Sajjad Sharif were translated into German by Hendrik Jackson at a workshop about the detour of interlinear translations. Another participant in the workshop was the poet Shahnaz Munni from Bangladesh . Sajjad Sharif presented the project in 2016 at the Berlin Poetry Festival together with other authors with readings and discussions.
