action
Sakiko, a young woman from Japan's mountainous region, Yamanashi Prefecture , has been drawn to money since she was a child. So on the advice of her mother, she becomes a cashier at the local bank. But soon Sakiko only feels a feeling of emptiness, because the money does not belong to her. When the bank is robbed and Sakiko is taken hostage, the gangsters flee to the Aokigahara Jukai , a huge wilderness at the foot of the sacred Mount Fujisan , where they all fall into a ravine. Only Sakiko survives by clinging to a suitcase that contains the money from the robbery. When she is found, Sakiko becomes a media event. But you can't get the money sunk in the suitcase out of your mind. Now she finds a new meaning in her life.
A first expedition in the form of a family excursion to the Jukai fails due to a lack of preparation. In a television broadcast, Sakiko learns that geologist Prof. Morita of Tamagawa University in Tokyo is an expert in exploring the Jukai. So she decides to study geology there. She makes an incredible effort, studies geology, becomes an excellent swimmer and mountaineer and does everything to get the money in the suitcase. Finally she dares another expedition ...
Reviews
“In a grotesquely exuberant style, the film tells of the apathy of the middle class, the obsession with having money, and feminist self-awareness in today's Japan. The energetic heroine takes every risk without hesitation in order to get money. Shinobu Yaguchi (born 1967) also uses visual puns and irony in his second feature film, transforming the serious efforts of his protagonist into an absurd comedy and her hyperactive obsession into charming slapstick. Quite the enfant terrible of independent Japanese cinema, Yaguchi imitates the aerial view of the lonely wilderness in Stanley Kubrick's › Shining ‹ and incorporates a funny cartoon made of still images from the bank's surveillance camera.
