Mir Laik Ali Khan, Nawab Sir Salar Jung II. Munir ud-Daula, KCIE (* 1862 - † July 1889 ) was divan of the Indian princely state of Hyderabad (= Haiderabad)after the death of his father until 1887.

origin

Laik Ali Khan was the eldest of the two sons of Salar Jung I , whose family traced their origins back to Sheikh Ovais Karani , a contemporary of Mohammed , from Medina . He received his education first under an English private tutor, then at Nizam's College, the capital. The twenty-year-old was sent on a trip to England in 1882 with his brother Mir Sãdut Ali Khan.

Divan

After the sudden death of his father, he became - the Nizam Asaf Jah VI. was still a minor - appointed as successor. Because of his youth and inexperience, he was given the Nawab Bashir ud-Daula as co-regent. After a regency council was formed, the formal investiture took place at a durbar on Feb. 24, 1884. When the Nizam took office in October of the same year, he confirmed Salar Jung II in office, although the British had temporarily expressed concerns. The Regency Council was converted into an advisory body.

The reorganization of the administrative apparatus begun by his father was continued, the first in the provinces to reform the courts for civil matters. Some of the traditional rights of the vassals and village lords were replaced. Around 600 members of the landed gentry descended from the Arab conquerors, supporters of Sultan Nawaz Jung , occupied police posts in October 1884 and surrounded the residence of the divan. A skillful mix of threats and diplomacy ended the uprising without bloodshed. Nawaz Jung was exiled and was fined Rs 100,000 .

The premier went to Calcutta to see the viceroy in February 1885 and visited Lucknow on the return journey . In the next two years there were tensions between the - absolute - ruler and his prime minister, although the British resident repeatedly intervened in favor of Salar Jung, who was forced to resign in April 1887.

Salar Jung thought it advisable to go to England, where he received the KCIE accolade from Queen Victoria at Osborne House on August 18th . He spent the brief rest of his life in Poona .
