Mir Yusuf Ali Khan Nawab Salar Jung III. Bahadur (born June 13, 1889 in Poona ; † March 2, 1949 in his palace Dewan Devdi in Hyderabad ) was divan of the Indian princely state of Hyderabad (= Haiderabad) from 1912 . His father and grandfather had already held this office. He collected art for the rest of his life.

origin

Yusuf Ali Khan, was the son of Salar Jung II , whose family traced back their origins to Sheikh Ovais Karani , a contemporary of Mohammed , from Medina . His mother was Zainab Begum, daughter of Nawab Syed Abul Hassan. He received his education at Nizam's College. He remained a bachelor throughout his life and the family died out with him.

Life path

Because of his youth, he was appointed to the divan for a period of three years on probation, with Sayyed Husain Ali Bilgrami ( Imud ul-Mulk ) and Faridoon-ul-Mulk at his side as advisors . During his tenure, the principle of responsibility according to business areas was introduced. After friction with Nizam Asaf Jah VII, who rejected any democratic form of government , he resigned from office after two and a half years, which the ruler took over himself. In 1940 he received an income of over HRK 150,000 from the family's large estates from 203,000 subjects .

After his resignation, he traveled the world and dedicated himself to collecting antique art objects. In doing so, he bought without too much expertise. The approximately 40,000 objects that were found in the 78 rooms of his city palace Deva Devdi when he died form the basis of the Salar Jung Museum . This museum, whose holdings, including numerous valuable manuscripts, have been cataloged by G. Venkatchalam over two years, was initially set up in 1951 in 30 rooms of the palace. It was nationalized in 1961 and relocated to a new building south of the Musi seven years later . The most important exhibits include a Koran from the 12th century, the dagger of Jahangir and the fruit knife from Nurejan .
