Salesius Mayer

Salesius Mayer (born May 28, 1816 in Röhrsdorf , † November 19, 1876 in Osek ) was a university professor and abbot of the Osek Monastery .

Life

Mayer entered the Osek monastery in 1836, studied theology in Leitmeritz and was ordained a priest in 1841. Received his doctorate in theology from the University of Prague in 1844, he taught Old Testament Bible studies and oriental languages ​​at the monastery home school, since 1853 in Olomouc. From 1850 he supplemented moral theology at the University of Prague and in 1856 received the chair of moral theology.

In 1853 he was appointed secretary for religious affairs by the Prague Archbishop Friedrich zu Schwarzenberg , whom he accompanied to the 1st Vatican Council in 1869/70 as an advisor. In 1857 and 1860 he was dean of the theological faculty, in 1874 rector of the University of Prague and was elected abbot on May 20, 1875. He had the monastery library expanded and the church and parts of the monastery buildings renovated, but died in November of the following year. He wrote several articles on Wetzer and Weltes Kirchenlexikon.
