Salinicoccus is a genus of bacteria. The type species is Salinicoccus roseus .
features
The species of Salinicoccus are spherical with a diameter of 0.5 to 2.5 µm. They are immobile and do not form spores. They are strictly aerobic , which means they require oxygen. The catalase and oxidase test are positive.
Salinicoccus is moderately halophilic (salt tolerant). The different types were u. a. found in soda lakes and in salt soils. Salinicoccus jeotgali and S. lutues were isolated from Korean fermented seafood Jeotgal . Some species, such as Salinicoccus salsiraiae and S. roseus , reduce nitrate to nitrite in the absence of oxygen . Also alkaliphilic or alkali-tolerant species are present. Salinicoccus alkaliphilus tolerates pH values between 6.5 and 11.5. Best growth occurs at pH 9.0. In Salinicoccus jeotgali , the highest growth rates are at pH 7, but also grow at pH values between 6.5 and 11.0.
