Salisbury was a district in the county of Wiltshire in England . It was named after the city of Salisbury , which was also the administrative center. Other significant places were Alderbury , Amesbury , Bulford , Durrington , Redlynch , Winterslow and Wilton (the former capital of the county). The traditional city charter of Salisbury only extended to about one sixtieth of the entire area. The world famous Stonehenge is located near Amesbury .

The district was formed on April 1, 1974 and was formed from the merger of the municipal boroughs New Sarum (Salisbury) and Wilton and the rural districts Amesbury, Mere and Tisbury and Salisbury and Wilton.

On April 1, 2009, in addition to Salisbury, all other districts in Wiltshire were abolished and united in the new Wiltshire Unitary Authority .
