Original version

The original version of the song ( ISWC T-003.148.024-6) was made for the musical theater piece Qululu  /قولولهwritten. The Sultanate of Egypt was then a British protectorate ; resistance to British rule grew after the end of the First World War (see Revolution in Egypt 1919 ). The text of Badi 'Khayri deals with the return of civilians as members of the Egyptian Labor Corps at the Palestine front had built for the British armed forces railway lines and roads. The song became a folk song .

The later version (ISWC T-004.037.491-1) retained the refrain, but is otherwise musically an arrangement by Jeff Barnel . Conceived as oriental " world music ", there are four language versions with Dalida: Egyptian-Arabic and French ( published 1977) as well as Italian and German (published 1978). While the Egyptian-Arabic version addresses the longing for and return to a previously known place (homeland Egypt) from a first-person perspective , the French text ( Un homme des sables ) and then the Italian ( Uomo di sabbia by Bruno Lauzi ) and the German ( He came from Semara of Fred Weyrich ) who leaves his home by a man from the desert. In France, the song reached number 6 in the charts in December 1977 .

Salma ya salama was the first of Dalida's six publications in Arabic. Neuabmischungen in House style published by Dalida's brother Orlando 1996/97, including a flamenco version with Spanish vocals by Sébastien Chato .
