Salomon Adler (* 1630 in Gdansk , † shortly after 1691 or 1709 in Milan ) was a German portrait painter of the Baroque and worked mainly in Milan and Bergamo .

He is also found in literature as Salomon von Danzig , Salomone de Danzica or Salomone dall 'Herr de Andegavia . Salomone dall 'Herr de Andegavia is based on interrogation (Andegavia stands for Danzig and overall it means Solomon, Lord from Danzig). Adler is in a letter that was on the back of a presumed self-portrait in the Brera Picture Gallery. Older names are simply Monsieur or Cavalier Salomon.

Life

Adler came from a family of cloth workers in Danzig. He was of the Lutheran faith. According to Drost, his style of painting (based on Rembrandt and his predilection for oriental clothing in his portraits) indicates an early training in Gdansk. It is possible that he was again an apprentice Andreas Ruthardt of the same age with the painter Daniel Schulz in Danzig and probably went to Italy with him before 1653 (his baptismal entry in Danzig in Italy has been handed down in 1653). His pictures show the influence of portrait painters from Venice ( Nicolò Remieri and Tiberio Tinello ). There is evidence that he was in Milan between 1679 and 1691. He was very much appreciated as a portrait painter.

He was the teacher of Fra Galgario , who went to Milan to study his works. Another student was Vittore Ghislandi (1655-1743), who also portrayed him several times.

Rembrandt may also have influenced him through his pupil Wilhelm Drost , who was temporarily in Venice. In addition, the tenebrosi school with its light and dark contrasts had an effect on him.

Self-portraits of Adler can be found in Bergamo, Milan (Breta Gallery and Franco Marinotti Collection), Budapest (possibly a replica of the self-portrait in the Uffizi) and in the Uffizi . In addition to Rembrandt, the French court painter Hyacinthe Rigaud is also mentioned as an influence. The only work signed by Adler is the portrait of a young man in the Germanic National Museum in Nuremberg, which was acquired from the Italian art trade in 1963. More than a dozen paintings are known, almost all of them portraits (except for a Judith and an allegory).

In 1955 there was an exhibition on him in the Palazzo della Ragione (Bergamo) .

Individual evidence

  1. He was baptized on March 14th according to New German Biography
  2. ^ According to Neuer Deutscher Biographie, he died soon after 1691. Sometimes 1709 is also given, for example in the general artist lexicon. There it is pointed out that it is still mentioned in 1716 after L. Balzaretti (Le Muse I, 1964).
