Fra Galgario (self-portrait 1732)

Fra Galgario (born as Giuseppe Vittore Ghislandi , he also called himself Giuseppe and Vittore Ghislandi as a painter , born March 4, 1655 in Bergamo , † beginning of December 1743 ibid) was an Italian portrait painter of the late Baroque and early Rococo periods .

Life

Ghislandi's father Domenico (* around 1656–1672) was a painter of landscapes and frescoes . One of Fra Galgario's brothers was also a painter. Fra Galgario learned from Giacomo Cotta (1627–1689), Bartolomeo Bianchi . From 1675 he was in Venice , where he became a member (lay brother) of the Minorite Order of San Francesco di Paola and changed his name from Giuseppe to Vittore. With the exception of a stay in Milan from 1688 to 1691 (where he became friends with the German portrait painter Salomon Adler and worked for him), he stayed in Venice until 1702. There he was also a student of Sebastiano Bombelli . Cardinal Pietro Ottoboni invited him to Rome , which he turned down. In 1702 he joined the Paulaner Order and entered the Galgario Monastery in Bergamo under the name Fra Vittorio (known as the painter as Fra Galgario), but was also frequently in Milan. In 1717 he became a member of the Accademia Clementina in Bologna . He mainly portrayed noble families in the Bergamo area, which he seldom left, but also simple people and clergy. He enjoyed a European reputation, pictures of him came to Lisbon , Vienna (including Prince Eugene ), Paris (including Marshal Belle-Isle).

He continued the tradition of portrait painting in Bergamo from the 16th century (his model was in particular Giovanni Battista Moroni ). His portraits are distinguished by their realistic rendering.
