Cabañas is a place and a municipality in the Zacapa department in Guatemala . The place is about 150 km northeast of Guatemala City and 35 km west of the city of Zacapa not far from the Atlantic highway CA 9 at an altitude of 230 m.

The 136 km² municipality is located in the west of Zacapa and extends from the valley of the Río Motagua into the mountains to the south of it. It has a total of almost 15,000 inhabitants, most of whom are Ladinos . The municipality consists of the main town Cabañas from 19 "rural communities" ( Aldeas ) and other hamlets. The main branches of the economy are agriculture , handicrafts and the service sector .

Bordering municipalities are Usumatlán in the north, Huité in the east and San Diego in the south. In the west, Cabañas borders on the departments of El Progreso and Jalapa , in the southeast also on Chiquimula .
