Salomon Ehrmann (born December 19, 1854 in Ostrovec, Czech Republic ; † October 24, 1926 in Vienna ) was an Austrian dermatologist, social medicine specialist and professor at the Medical Faculty of the University of Vienna.

Life

Salomon Ehrmann was born in Ostrovec as the son of Marcus Ehrman and Franziska Fanny Ehrmann . He first studied art history in Prague, but then turned to medicine and began studying medicine in Vienna in 1874, which he completed with a doctorate in 1880. He worked in the physiological institute under Ernst Wilhelm von Brücke , who recognized Ehrmann's talent for drawing and used him as a demonstrator. Ehrmann heard, among other things, dermatology from Moritz Kaposi . Between 1884 and 1888 he was an assistant doctor at the Isidor Neumann Clinic . In 1887 he qualified as a professor for dermatology and syphilis. In 1887 he became a private lecturer, followed in 1990 by the titular professor. In 1908 he was appointed professor until 1917 when he was appointed professor of dermatology and syphilidology at the University of Vienna. In 1908 Salomon Ehrmann moved to the Vienna General Hospital .

Salomon Ehrmann was the first to demonstrate the "spirochaetae pallidae" in the nerve substance and did his best to fight venereal diseases. He worked on dyes in the skin, on industrial damage to the skin and on syphilis.

Salomon Ehrmann was a member of the "Austrian Society for Combating Venereal Diseases", Vice President of the "Vienna Dermatological Society", board member of the "German Dermatological Society" and honorary member of numerous foreign dermatological societies.

Ehrmann belongs to the “Viennese dermatological school”, which arose in the mid-19th century around the physicians Carl Ludwig Sigmund von Ilanor (1810–1883) and Ferdinand von Hebra (1816–1880).

The Austrian dermatologist Alfred Perutz (1885–1934) is one of Salomon Ehrmann's students .

Ehrmann was the head of the Vienna Jewish Community . He was also a member of the honorary committee of the “Support Association of Jewish Students from Galicia in Vienna”.

Association for the Rescue of Jewish Children

In April 1916, the organization B'nai B'rith suggested the establishment of an "Association for the Rescue of Abandoned Jewish Children of Galicia and Bukovina". Salomon Ehrmann was president of the organization at the time. Lisette Gelber from Vienna gave him significant support in founding the association. Ehrmann became the first vice-president of the association, the doctor Edmund Kohn (1836–1929), who worked at the Vienna General Hospital, became its president. By the beginning of 2017, a total of 22 orphanages and institutions had been set up in Galicia and Bukovina, in which orphaned and vulnerable children of all denominations found refuge and help. Donations were collected in Vienna to finance the projects.
