Solomon's Chapel

Salomons Kapel is a medieval church ruin on the northern tip of the Danish island Bornholm, known as Hammeren (also Hammerknuden ) . The ruin lies at the foot of the approximately 50 meter high granite plateau Hammeren , on the northwestern side of the lake towards the Baltic Sea .

history

The chapel was built at the beginning of the 14th century, probably at the suggestion of the Archbishop of Lund . After the Danish King Svend Grathe bequeathed large parts of the island of Bornholm to the Archbishop of Lund in 1149, the northern part of the island was also owned by the church. Before 1325 a small rectangular church interior was built from hewn field stone . The church vestibule on the south side was built later.

The name was probably given to the Dominican Salomon , who was sent to Cologne with others by the General Chapter of the Dominicans in Bologna in 1221 to found a convent there. Solomon of Cologne was later considered one of the holy men of the Dominicans, and since the Dominican order had a lot of influence on the papal court in Rome at the beginning of the 14th century , it was probably advantageous to show that the name was connected to this church power.

The construction of the chapel was related to one of the herring markets that took place in the 13th – 15th centuries. Originated in the 18th century on the east and north coast of Bornholm. The small church building served as a place of worship for the traders and especially for the fishermen who caught herring in large quantities in this Baltic Sea region and who had set up a small settlement near the chapel. Close to the chapel in a north-westerly direction was a spring that was considered sacred and of which the stone setting has still been preserved. After the fishing subsided, the settlement was abandoned and the chapel fell into disrepair. In addition, the chapel and the holy spring quickly lost their importance after the Reformation from 1536. In total, the chapel was used for about three hundred years.

Nothing has survived from the earlier inventory of the chapel. It is believed that the smaller bell of the church in Allinge comes from Solomon's chapel.

The church ruins are located on a hiking trail around Hammeren and are now popular with tourists. The remains of the church are under monument protection .
