Sedat Balkanlı (born January 15, 1965 in Istanbul ; † April 29, 2009 ibid), usually just called Sedat for short , was a Turkish football player who was diagnosed with the rare disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in 1997 .

Career

He began his football career at Gaziosmanpaşa in Istanbul . In 1989 I switched to Konyaspor . The defender also made his breakthrough in Konya . In July 1992 Sedat moved to Bursaspor . Two years later came the move to the traditional Turkish club Galatasaray Istanbul . In his first season he scored eight goals in the Red-Yellows, so that he got the nickname “Altın Kafa” (Golden Head). Despite the good performance he had to pack his bags and was loaned to league rivals Eskişehirspor for the 1995/96 season.

In the summer of 1996 he moved to Fenerbahçe Istanbul . However, he could no longer concentrate on football and had more and more problems keeping up with his teammates in terms of sport.

Gradually, Sedat noticed that he was not able to complete the training units he requested to the extent expected. When the symptoms got worse, he went to the doctor. It took time for doctors to diagnose the rare disease ALS in 1997. Doctors in the US gave it a lifespan of two years. Sedat was able to live with this disease for 12 years and died from it on April 29, 2009.
