Salou Souleymane

Salou Souleymane (born November 23, 1953 in Namaro ) is a Nigerien general .

Life

Salou Souleymane completed his school career in 1973 with a baccalaureate and in the same year became a member of the Nigerien armed forces . He trained as a fighter pilot in Morocco , Germany , France and the United States , among others . As such, he served in the Nigerien Air Force and in 1999 reached the rank of colonel . Souleymane became the Air Force Chief of Staff in 2003 . The following year he obtained a Diplôme d'études supérieures spécialisées in Defense and Geostrategy at the University of Panthéon-Assas . In 2007 he was appointed Brigadier General.

After the military coup against President Mamadou Tandja and the seizure of power by the Supreme Council for the Restoration of Democracy , Salou Souleymane became Chief of Staff of the Nigerien Armed Forces in 2010 . In this position he replaced Moumouni Boureima . Under the civilian president Mahamadou Issoufou , Seyni Garba became chief of staff in 2011 and Salou Souleymane was instead appointed inspector general of the armed forces and the gendarmerie .

He was retired from the armed forces in mid-2015. Souleymane was arrested after a failed coup attempt against President Issoufou on December 18, 2015. A military court sentenced him to 15 years in prison in early 2018. A son of Souleymanes and several co-defendants also received prison terms of several years.
