Seyni Garba (born January 1, 1953 in Garankédey ) is a Nigerien officer and diplomat .

Life

Seyni Garba attended elementary school in his native Garankédey and middle school in Dosso . Then he went to the Lycée Issa Korombé in Niamey . He began studying mathematics and physics at the University of Niamey in 1974 , until he joined the Nigerien Armed Forces in 1975 and completed three years of military training in France , including at the Saint-Cyr Military School.

During his career with the Nigerien Armed Forces, Garba was the commander of various parachute companies. In 1990 he became the commandant of Defense Zone No. 1 and Training Association in Tondibiah . After the coup in Mali in 1991, he worked as a Nigerien representative in the peace process until 1994. Under President Ibrahim Baré Maïnassara , he was Deputy Chief of the General Staff from 1996 to 1997 and 1999.

Garba took over the post of High Commissioner for the Restoration of Peace in 1999, which he held until 2003. In this function he was entrusted with the implementation of the peace agreements between the Niger government and former paramilitary groups. In 2000 he organized the "Flame of Peace" ceremony of the burning of paramilitaries' weapons. Another program supported by the United Nations Development Program in 2002 included the collection of illegal weapons in Diffa and N'Guigmi in conjunction with an amnesty law .

From 2003 to 2010 Seyni Garba was again Deputy Chief of the General Staff. He reached the rank of Brigadier General in 2006 . After the coup by Salou Djibo in 2010, he was promoted to divisional general and at the same time appointed inspector general of the Nigerien armed forces and the national gendarmerie. In the same year Garba's appointment as Niger's ambassador to Morocco followed . Salou Djibo's successor, President Mahamadou Issoufou , appointed Seyni Garba as Chief of the General Staff in 2010, succeeding Salou Souleymane . Under his leadership, the armed forces fought against the terrorist group Boko Haram . Garba retired in 2018. Ahmed Mohamed succeeded him as Chief of the General Staff .

Seiny Garba is married and has five children.
