Life

Ahmed Mohamed attended elementary and middle school and joined the Niger Army in 1979 . After training at a military academy in Montpellier , France , he reached the rank of lieutenant in 1985 . From 1989 he worked in a leading position in the administration of the armed forces. In 1990 he became a captain and in 1995 a major .

Under Head of State Ibrahim Baré Maïnassara , Ahmed Mohamed was first assigned to the Personnel and Training Department of the Directorate for Administrative and Financial Affairs in the Ministry of Defense in 1996 and soon after rose to the command of Defense Zone No. 2. An incident occurred in 1997 when he was detained by mutinous soldiers and Defense Minister Ousmane Issoufou Oubandawaki had to negotiate his release. Mohamed was then used in the civil administration. From 1997 to 1998 he was prefect of the Dosso department and from 1998 prefect of the Tillabéri department .

President Ibrahim Baré Maïnassara, accused of having an authoritarian style and insufficient democratic legitimacy, was killed in a military coup on April 9, 1999 . Ahmed Mohamed became one of 14 officers in the military junta formed on April 11, 1999 , the Council of National Reconciliation . The junta saw it as its task to ensure the return to democratic and civil government. Mohamed was deputy coordinator of the technical committee that drafted a new constitution , a new electoral law and regulations for the parties of Niger . He also worked as director of the state vehicle fleet . In December 1999, the Council of National Reconciliation handed over power to the government of the newly elected President Mamadou Tandja . Mohamed was promoted to lieutenant colonel in 2000 and continued his military career.

When Mamadou Tandja tried to obtain a third term as president that was not originally provided for in the constitution, another military coup broke out on February 18, 2010. Ahmed Mohamed, who had meanwhile become a colonel , was again a member of a temporarily ruling military junta, the Supreme Council for the Restoration of Democracy . In addition, on March 1, 2010, he became Minister of Transport, Tourism and Crafts in the interim government under Prime Minister Mahamadou Danda . The Supreme Council for the Restoration of Democracy was replaced in January 2011 by the government of the new civilian President Mahamadou Issoufou .

Ahmed Mohamed first became Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces under President Issoufou in 2011. In 2012 he was promoted to Brigadier General and in 2018 appointed Chief of General Staff to succeed Seyni Garba . After loss-making terrorist attacks on the military camps in Inatès and Siné Godar , Ahmed Mohamed was replaced in this position by Salifou Mody in early 2020 .
