Supreme Council for the Restoration of Democracy

The Supreme Council for the Restoration of Democracy (French: Conseil suprême pour la Restauration de la Démocratie , CSRD for short ), led by Salou Djibo , was a military junta in Niger that was founded on February 18, 2010 during the coup d'état against President Mamadou Tandja . It existed until January 2011.

Events of the coup

The CSRD suspended the Niger constitution and dissolved all state institutions. President Mamadou Tandja was captured in a military barracks on February 18, 2010. On February 23, the Council appointed Mahamadou Danda as the new Prime Minister.

The CSRD stated that its aim was to make Niger an "example of democracy and good government".

Salou Djibo

Head of State Salou Djibo determined the composition of the junta by decree of October 10, 2010. In addition to himself as chairman, it had the following officers as members:

consequences

A referendum in October introduced a new constitution and guaranteed the military political immunity for the coup , but also obliged them to give up power promptly. This was followed in January of next year by presidential and parliamentary elections , which were peaceful and compliant with the rules, and from which the opposition candidate Mahamadou Issoufou emerged victorious.

The ousted President Mamadou Tandja was brought to justice, but acquitted of all charges and released in May 2011.
