The Salt and Light Festival has been the main festival in the Lower Saxony spa town of Bad Harzburg , which has been held annually on the last weekend in August since 1970 . It is in the tradition of a salt festival founded in 1575 by Duke Julius of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel .

history

In 1757, pure brine was promoted for the first time in the Harzburg area for salt production. Since the Principality of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel was no longer dependent on salt imports, which were very valuable at that time, Duke Julius of Braunschweig and Lüneburg founded a salt festival for the first time on Bartholomew's Day , August 24, 1575. Originally the festival lasted only one day. For almost three centuries, the one-day festival remained in its original form, the climax of which was the annual salt sermon in the bathing park or in the Luther Church . With the closure of the salt works in 1849, the festival lost its importance and was forgotten. The Bad Harzburg Salt and Lights Festival, which has been held annually since 1970, has followed this tradition. Only after a century was the festival reintroduced in the 20th century. In 1970 it got its current name, at the same time the festival was extended to several days and provided with an extended program. In 2016, around 50,000 people attended the Salt and Light Festival.

The salt and light festival in 2018 was thematically and organizationally linked to the 950th anniversary of the Harzburg . At the same time, the so-called Wipfelleuchten , which consists of a light installation accompanied by rope dancers in the crowns of the Treetop Walk Bad Harzburg , was expanded.

The traditional highlight of the festival is the large fireworks display in the Harzburg city park, which is set off on Saturday at 10:22 p.m. This main moment is accompanied by a broad ensemble of events and music performances in the spa area: Local and regional associations from the Goslar - Wernigerode - Osterode am Harz area present themselves to the guests and show their skills; the young scene accompanies this with party music. In the "Stöbermeile" in Schmiedestrasse , handicrafts and the "Schlemmermeile" in Rudolf-Huch -strasse offer a variety of culinary offers.

The play park will be set up in the lower bathing park, offering attractions for children and adults with trampoline, bungee run and goal wall shooting options. You can also find the French market “Le petit marché français” (the French fairy tale), which offers French dishes from Friday to Sunday.
