Sam Drukker

Samuel Drukker (born November 20, 1957 in Goes ) is a Dutch artist . His work includes oil paintings and drawings .

life and work

Drukker grew up in Assen in the province of Drenthe . In 1982 Sam Drukker completed his studies with Matthijs Röling at the Academie Minerva in Groningen . After his training, Sam Drukker worked in Paris and Barcelona . Since 1990 he has been teaching at the Wackers Academie in Amsterdam . In 2011, the Hermitage Amsterdam named him artist of the year.

Sam Drukker takes up Old Testament , mythological and erotic themes in his figurative painting . The focus is always on the person portrayed. The figure is painterly worked out, while the background of the picture is mostly left empty or only hinted at. Drukker chooses unconventional picture carriers to paint his paintings. For example, he uses weathered canvas or old pieces of wood. He mainly paints surfaces that have a history that is independent of the work and adds his own trace to them with his painting.

He belongs to the fourth generation of a group of Dutch figurative abstraction artists.

The Joods monument , a sandstone work with a self-portrait made on COR-TEN steel as a crouching man , holding a tallit , the prayer shawl, was unveiled in Assen on May 3, 1990 .

For the series of works “Minyen” Sam Drukker portrayed ten Jewish men between the ages of 83 and 103 who experienced the Second World War as adults. The portraits created between 2012 and 2014 are more than individual representations of people; they tell the story of a post-war generation.

Awards

In 2011, Drukker was awarded the € 10,000 art week Prijs as Artist of the Year 2011 ( Kunstenaar van het Jaar ).
