Life

Born in England, Dunn grew up in Victoria, Canada . His interest in heavy metal was piqued at the age of nine, at 15 he hosted a radio show that only played metal. As a teenager he played bass in various rock and metal bands. In 1993 he met Scot McFadyen. Dunn was the bassist for funk rock band Fungkus at the time , which enabled McFadyen to perform at a concert during the protests at Clayoquot Sound . A few years later, Dunn moved to the east coast of Canada, where he began studying social anthropology at York University in Toronto . He completed this in 2001 with an MA .

Act

While graduating, Dunn initially planned to write a book on the history of heavy metal. Scot McFadyen convinced him of the idea of producing a documentary about the genre instead. For the next three years, Dunn and McFadyen were busy building up film finance . After a Canadian film distributor and the Canadian state film subsidy had given advances, filming began in June 2004. Dunn and McFadyen received additional financial support from Dunn's family. The result of this work was the documentary Metal - A Headbanger's Journey published in 2005 . The second project was a film about the global metal scene and its fans and was released in 2007 under the title Global Metal . In 2004, while making the first film, Dunn met Iron Maiden's band manager Rod Smallwood. Through his intervention, the filmmakers were given permission to document an Iron Maiden flight around the world in the band's own plane. The film was released in 2009 under the title Iron Maiden: Flight 666 . In 2010 he released another documentary, Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage , in which he pays tribute to the Canadian rock band Rush .

Already after the release of Metal - A Headbanger's Journey , voices from Metal fans were loud, who said that the subject of Metal could not be sufficiently illuminated in such a short film. Spurred on by this, the series Metal Evolution was created at the end of 2011 in collaboration with the Canadian music channel MuchMore , which, in addition to the history of metal, also deals with individual subgenres such as Thrash Metal or Nu Metal .

For Metal - A Headbanger's Journey , Dunn and McFadyen received the 2007 Gemini Award for “Best Screenplay in a Documentary or Series”.
