Samuel Ealy Johnson, Jr. (born October 11, 1877 in Buda , Texas , † October 23, 1937 in Stonewall , Texas) was an American farmer, a Democratic Party politician in the Texas House of Representatives and the father of the later US President Lyndon B. Johnson .

Life

Sam Ealy Johnson was the fifth child of his father of the same name, Sam Ealy Johnson, Sr. and was born in Texas in 1877 . He grew up in simple circumstances, although he was considered intelligent from a young age. Johnson originally wanted to become a lawyer, but for financial reasons was initially forced to work on his family's farm. Nevertheless, he soon became known in his home region on the Pedernales River through his loyal and friendly appearance , so that he decided in 1904 to run for a seat in the Texas House of Representatives . As a candidate for the Democratic Party , he succeeded in winning this election, whereupon he represented the 89th district in the state parliament from January 1905. However, since it was an after-work parliament , Johnson continued to work as a farmer. In 1906 he was confirmed for a second term in parliament after he had introduced a law to liberalize the handling of calves at sporting events. After winning re-election, he exercised his mandate until the beginning of 1909. Eight years later, in 1917, he was re-elected to the Texas House of Representatives for the 89th District in a special election after that seat was surprisingly vacant. His re-election was unopposed, so that after winning re-elections in 1918 and 1920 he exercised this mandate again until January 1923.

On August 20, 1907, Johnson married Rebekah Baines (1881-1958), the daughter of a Baptist minister. A year later, on August 27, 1908, the first son Lyndon B. Johnson (1908-1973) was born, who was to become President of the United States from 1963 to 1969 . In addition to Lyndon B. Johnson, four other children emerged from the marriage: Rebekah Johnson Bobbitt (1910–1978), Josefa Johnson White Moss (1912–1961), Sam Houston Johnson (1914–1978) and Lucia Johnson Alexander (1916–1997 ).

Sam Ealy Johnson died of a heart attack on October 23, 1937 at the age of 60 . This fact was kept secret for a long time during his son's presidency. His son Lyndon also died of a heart attack in 1973 at the age of 64, as did his second son Sam Houston Johnson. A few months before his death, Lyndon B. Johnson was elected to the US House of Representatives , but Johnson did not see his son's political career as a Senator , parliamentary leader in the Senate , vice president and president. He finds his final resting place in the Johnson family cemetery not far from the Lyndon Baines Johnson Ranch .
