Sami Hadawi (born March 6, 1904 in Jerusalem , † April 22, 2004 in Toronto ) ( سامي هداوي) was a Palestinian scholar and author. He became known for his documentation of the impact of the Palestinian War on the Arab population in Palestine and the published statistics for individual villages for the period before the Israeli declaration of independence . Hadawi worked as a land surveyor until he was expelled from Jerusalem after a violent skirmish between Israeli and Jordanian troops in the neighborhood where he lived. He continued to work on documenting the Palestinian land claims and published several books on the Palestinian War and the Palestinian refugees .

Early life

Hadawi was born in Jerusalem to a family of Arab Christians . His father was a soldier in the army of the Ottoman Empire and fell in the First World War . In 1915, after the death of the father, the family moved to Amman . Three years later he worked as a non-official translator for the British Army , then returned to Palestine, where he then worked for the Land Registration Office.

His interest in the structure of Arab villages began with his work there and with work for the Land Settlement Department, for which he worked from 1920 to 1927. Hadawi worked as a property valuation inspector from 1938 to 1948. and was the lead author of Village Statistics 1945: A Classification of Land and Area Ownership in Palestine , a census of land and population in the British Mandate. Until 1948 he lived in his grandfather's house in the Jewish Quarter in the old city of Jerusalem . In 1948 he and his wife Nora and their two children built a house for themselves in Katamon . When the Israeli forces advanced in the context of the Palestine War, Hadawi was forced to give up his residence.

exile

Hadawi's wife died of a heart attack shortly after fleeing to Jordan. Hadawi carried out a similar activity for the Jordanian land registry authorities as it did under British rule. He held this position until 1952. Then he became an expert for the United Nations Conciliation Commission for Palestine (UNCCP) in New York , where it was his job to determine the property of the Palestinians who had left their homes after the Palestine War . He subsequently co-founded the Palestinian Information Bureau in 1959 and then two offices for the Arab League in the United States . His last professional activity was in the 1960s as director of the Institute for Palestine Studies (IPS) in Beirut . At that time he published Palestine - Loss of a Heritage .

He retired in 1970, moving to Toronto , where he began writing books on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, including Palestinian Rights and Losses in 1948 (1988) and Bitter Harvest: a Modern History of Palestine (1989). Hadawi died at the age of 100 on April 22, 2004 and was buried in Toronto, contrary to his stated will to be buried in his hometown of Jerusalem; "I would like to be buried in Jerusalem, but I have no choice," he said in the last interview he gave.
