Collection basin of the Eifel aqueduct

The collecting basin in Mechernich - Eiserfey is another touristic structure of the Eifel aqueduct , which served the ancient water supply of the Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium , the Roman Cologne .

The basin had two feed lines. The first was the canal that came from the headwaters of Grüner Pütz (Nettersheim), Kallmuth (including Klausbrunnen ) and Urfey , the second was the pipe that transported the water from the spring taps in the headwaters of "Hausener Benden" near Weyer to the collecting basin. The water then flowed through a third basin opening in an outgoing channel to Cologne. The basin was circular and had a clear diameter of 3.05 m. The floor made of brick slabs was about 2 m below the surface of the terrain. The wall of the pool was made of natural stone and was 0.52 m thick. Water plaster was applied inside. The upper end of the collecting basin was formed by rounded sandstone blocks.

The collecting basin was discovered in 1959 and archaeologically examined. After almost 50 years, the collecting basin was exposed again and a protective structure was erected over the basin, which was inaugurated in 2005 and which can be viewed at any time. The collecting basin is now station 11 of the Römerkanal hiking trail from Nettersheim to Cologne, which was renewed in 2012 .
